Laine, Kelly, Mathew, Buffy and I went hiking on Maui in 2013.  It was an unexpectedly steep and long hike.  My fitbit recorded 155 flights of stairs over about 4 miles.  Laine started out strong, but soon wanted me to carry her on her shoulders.  It was exhausting.  After this tough climb to the top, Laine hops off and says, relieved “phew!  that was tough!”.  In these pictures, Laine is faux hiking, then real-relaxing with Mathew and Kelly

We took so many hikes and bike rides.  Laine would sit on my shoulders during our hikes, or on a child seat on the back of my bike when going for rides.  Mathew would walk or bike next to us.  We went up San Bruno Mountain perhaps 30-40 times over the years.  Our habit was to go get a ham/bacon/turkey club sandwich with everything but the mustard at Plantation Café on Alameda in Menlo Park, then carry it to the top of the mountain.  Mathew would have half, and I would share my half with Laine.  She and we thoroughly enjoyed these hikes. We would bike all around Menlo Park and even Palo Alto.  Often going downtown, or going up Sand Hill Road to the green areas near where the 280 crosses.  We would eat, play Frisbee, play tag, run up and down the sides of the fountains.  We would also bike on Sawyer Camp Trail.  Laine loved seeing animals, like deer, wild large birds.  She was full of excitement with whatever she saw.  She was not a good walker at 3 and 4, and would want to be carried, but became an excellent hiker at 5 and 6, walking miles back and forth up and down San Bruno Mountain and Sawyer Camp Trail.  She was memorably and notably not a good hiker in the pictures below!

  1. As I am watching Laine photos, I recalled my family James (11 years old), Julian (4 years old), Sue and I taking a vacation in Blackforest, southern Germany in 1997. James juicily climbed up while Julian had to be carried on my back to reach the top of a mountain, but then he rolled down by himself. We also went to visit Badenweiler, a small histological town. Some photos are very similar though complete different places. Life is beautiful even though Laine’s journey is so short. I was pleased to see James’ passion for children. He is trained to be specialized in pediatrics and anesthesia. I hope he will be an excellent doctor to take care sick kids like Laine and save lives. I will also encourage Julian and extend to your son Mathew to study medicine as well.
